- Eenheid 4: Taalgebruik in geregtelike prosesse – 28 November-2 Desember
Akademia et al.’s first course “Introduction to forensic linguistics” kicks off soon
Akademia et al.’s first short course, Introduction to forensic linguistics, kicks off on 1 November 2022. The aim of this short course is to introduce prospective and current legal practitioners to the nature of forensic linguistics. The course offers the opportunity to gain knowledge about the enormous role that language plays in every aspect of the administration of justice. The course will be presented via online sessions in both Afrikaans and English and a certificate of completion will be issued to the course attendant.
Forensic linguistics is the application of scientific knowledge of language in the context of criminal and civil law. “Language plays an enormous role in every aspect of the administration of justice. In a multilingual country such as South Africa where English is the lingua franca, but the majority of the citizens do not have the skills to use English at a sufficient level, access to justice is obstructed,” said Dr Annelise de Vries, lecturer in Afrikaans at Akademia and course leader of the short course, Introduction to forensic linguistics.
The course is ideal for law students from NQF 6 level upwards, legal practitioners, criminologists, police officers, journalists, language practitioners, linguists, psychologists and behaviour analysts. However, anyone with a National Senior Certificate (NSC) and passion for forensic linguistics is welcome to register for the course.
The course will run over a period of six weeks, including one orientation week. The five learning units entail self-directed learning and online contact sessions of two hours per week:
- Orientation week – 1-5 November
- Unit 1: Introductory and expert testimony – 7-11 November
- Unit 2: Linguistic evidence and investigative linguistics (part 1) – 14-18 November
- Unit 3: Linguistic evidence and investigative linguistics (part 2) – 21-25 November
- Unit 4: Language use in the legal processes – 28 November-2 December
- Unit 5: Language minorities and the legal system – 5-9 December
The course Introduction to forensic linguistics has four expert course presenters. The first is De Vries who has a doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics, a master’s and honours degree in Afrikaans and Dutch, a BA degree in Communication Studies and a BA degree in Pastoral Counselling and Psychology. Dr Zakeera Docrat, also a presenter of this course, is a forensic and legal linguist, author and researcher. Dr Karien van den Berg is a senior lecturer at the North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, and Karien Brits is a fulltime language practitioner of Akademia and a parttime lecturer in Sepedi as Conversational Language.
The cost of this course amounts to R7 500 that includes all the sessions. Visit Akademia et al.’s web page for more information about this short course.
