“Dag Zero”, die 3de Wêreldoorlog, tsunami’s, El Nino … Minder as 1% van alle water op aarde is vir die mens beskikbaar. Doeltreffende bestuur van beskikbare hulpbronne is dus krities vir oorlewing. Hierdie kursus is daarop gemik om ʼn hoë vlak van bewusmaking te skep en studente in staat te stel om ʼn verskil in hulle lewens en werkplekke te maak.

Ideale kursusganger

Die kursus is ideaal vir studente wat addisionele loopbaanvaardighede wil bemeester, asook professionele mense in die werkplek wat nie oor spesifieke agtegrondskennis van waterbestuur beskik nie, en hulleself beter wil bekwaam. Die kursus is dus ʼn ideale geleentheid vir munisipale en regeringsamptenare behels met waterbestuur in enige hoedanigheid, sowel as individue in die mynbou-, landbou- en natuurbewaringsektore. Die kursus sal in Afrikaans en Engels onderrig word. Studente wat belangstel in verdere studies in omgewingsbestuur sal ook baat vind.

KURSUSAANBIEDERS

Francois van Wyk

Francois van Wyk gradueer aan die destydse Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit (RAU) en verwerf ook ʼn HOD en ʼn MSc in Omgewingsbestuur. Hy voltooi ook later die Gevorderde Bestuursprogram (AMP) by Henley Business School. Van Wyk spandeer vier jaar by die Departement Waterwese se Instituut vir Watergehaltestudies waar hy hoofsaaklik verantwoordelik is vir die ontwikkeling en implementering van moniteringsprogramme.

In 1992 sluit hy aan by Rand Water as senior besoedelingsbeheerbeampte en word in 1995 aangestel as Hoof van Opvangsgebiedbestuur (later Waterkwaliteitspesialis).

Sy pligte behels die monitering van watergehalte in die Bo-Vaal-opvangsgebied, en sluit die ontwikkeling van ʼn monitering- en bestuursprogram vir die Lesotho Hooglandskema in. Ander verantwoordelikhede behels die bestuur van oewerontwikkeling langs die Vaaldam en Vaalrivierbarrage, waterkwaliteitsverslae, sosiale media, bestuur van akwatiese indringerplante, monitering van vloede en die bestuur van publieke forums.

Van Wyk dien tydens sy loopbaan op die Raad van WISA, asook op die bestuurskomitees van verskeie Waternavorsingskommissieprojekte, die IVRS (Integrated Vaal River System), asook die Vaal Opvangsgebiedbestuursagentskap (Catchment Management Agency).

Hy bied ook gereeld voorleggings aan by konferensies en seminare, en dien as eksterne eksaminator vir studente op honneurs- en meestersgraadvlak. Van Wyk het ook op uitnodiging lesings aangebied vir die nagraadse studente by Universiteit van Johannesburg, en ʼn module in waterbestuur vir Universiteit van Pretoria (UP) se MSc-graad aangebied.

 

Leanne Zdyb Coetzee

Leanne Coetzee is ʼn watersuiwerings- en waterkwaliteitspesialis met 24 jaar ondervinding in die watersektor. Sy het by UP met ʼn MSc-graad in Mikrobiologie gegradueer en is geregistreer as ʼn professionele natuurwetenskaplike. Leanne het vir dertien jaar vir die Stadsraad van Pretoria gewerk waar sy betrokke was by die drinkwateraanlegtebestuur en monitering van drinkwatergehalte vir die stad. Sy het die drinkwaterlaboratorium gestig vir die stadsraad en was verantwoordelik vir die grootste installasie van SolarBees in die suidelike halfrond by die Rietvleidam.

Coetzee het toe by die privaat ingenieursfirma (CSVWater) aangesluit waar sy met die optimalisering en verbetering van water- en afvalwaterbehandelingswerke en verskeie aspekte van watergehaltebestuur gewerk het, insluitend die visualisering van inligting uit roetine-operasionele data, proses-evaluasies en oudits. Sy geniet interaksie en opleiding van laboratorium- en prosespersoneel om operasionele inligting en prosesse te verstaan en het ʼn groot belangstelling in navorsing en bestuur van eutrofiese waters, waterbehandeling en verbruikersgesondheid.

Sy het in 2020 aangesluit by Waterlab, ʼn privaat laboratorium, waar sy die molekulêre laboratorium gestig het vir die ontleding van Covid-19 in riool- en rivierwater en verskeie projekte saam met die WRC, UP, DTI , NICD en MRC voltooi het. Coetzee is nou besig met gastroïntestinaal virusontledingprojekte en metodeontwikkeling vir protosoë-parasiete.

As deel van haar portefeulje is sy betrokke (en vorige voorsitter) by die SABS Tegniese Komitee vir Watergehalte (TC147), wat die drinkwaterstandaard ontwikkel en voorheen voorsitter van die ISO TC 147 SC1-komitee vir Suid-Afrika was. Coetzee is ook betrokke by die Blou- en Groendruppel-sertifiseringsprogram as ʼn hoofouditeur.

Dr. Danie Nel

Dr. Nel het die volgende kwalifikasies verwerf:

Hy het wye ervaring binne munisipale verband opgedoen by die voormalige Johannesburgse Stadsraad / WMLC oor ʼn tydperk van negentien jaar. Hy was daarna werksaam by Rand Water oor ʼn tydperk van dertien jaar as Hoof: Sanitasie en Ontwerpsingenieur, en is die laaste dertien jaar werksaam as ʼn spesialiskonsultant, beide nasionaal en internasionaal.

Die spesialisvelde waarop gefokus word, is water- en rioolvoorsiening, suiwering, rehabilitasie van pype en stelsels, grootmaatwatervoorsieningsrisiko’s, projekbestuur van multidissiplinêre watervoorsieningsprojekte, asook spesialisadviseur, en dien dikwels as eksterne eksaminator op voorgraadse, meesters- en doktorale vlak vir ingenieurstudente.

IDEAL COURSE PARTICIPANT

The course is ideal for students seeking to master additional career skills, as well as professionals in the workplace lacking specific background knowledge of water management and wishing to better equip themselves. It is an opportunity for municipal and government officials involved in water management in any capacity, as well as individuals in the mining, agricultural, and conservation sectors. The course will be taught in both Afrikaans and English. Students interested in further studies in environmental management will also benefit.

The course will span four days, from 10-13 June 2024. (An additional half day can be included for assignment discussions or a practical excursion).

Francois van Wyk

Francois van Wyk graduated from the former Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit (RAU) and also obtained an HED and an MSc in Environmental Management. He also completed the Advanced Management Programme (AMP) at Henley Business School. Van Wyk spent four years at the Department of Water Affairs’ Institute for Water Quality Studies where he was mainly responsible for the development and implementation of monitoring programs.

In 1992, he joined Rand Water as a Senior Pollution Control Officer and was appointed Head of Catchment Area Management (later Water Quality Specialist) in 1995.

His duties include monitoring water quality in the Upper Vaal catchment area and the development of a monitoring and management programme for the Lesotho Highlands Scheme. Other responsibilities include managing bank development along the Vaal Dam and Vaal River barrage, water quality reports, social media, management of aquatic invasive plants, flood monitoring, and management of public forums.

Van Wyk served on the Council of WISA during his career, as well as on the management committees of various Water Research Commission projects, the IVRS (Integrated Vaal River System), as well as the Vaal Catchment Area Management Agency. He also regularly presents papers at conferences and seminars and serves as an external examiner for students at honour’s and master’s levels. Van Wyk has also lectured to postgraduate students at University of Johannesburg (UJ) by invitation, and he offered a module in water management for the MSc degree at the University of Pretoria (UP).

Leanne Zdyb Coetzee

Leanne Coetzee is a water purification and water quality specialist with 24 years of experience in the water sector. She graduated from UP with an MSc degree in Microbiology and is registered as a professional scientist. Coetzee worked for thirteen years for the City of Pretoria where she was involved in drinking water facilities management and monitoring of drinking water quality for the city. She established the drinking water laboratory for the city council and was responsible for the largest installation of SolarBees in the southern hemisphere at the Rietvlei Dam.

Coetzee then joined the private engineering firm (CSVWater) where she worked on the optimisation and improvement of water and wastewater treatment works and various aspects of water quality management, including visualization of information from routine operational data, process evaluations, and audits. She enjoys interacting with and training laboratory and process personnel to understand operational information and processes and has a keen interest in research and management of eutrophic waters, water treatment, and consumer health.

In 2020, she joined Waterlab, a private laboratory, where she started the molecular laboratory for the analyses of COVID-19 in sewage and raw water, and completed numerous projects with the WRC, UP, Dti, NICD and MRC. Coetzee is currently busy with gastrointestinal virus analyses projects and method development for protozoa parasites.

She is the former chairperson of both the SABS Technical Committee for Water Quality (TC147) which develops the drinking water standard and the ISO TC 147 SC1 Committee for South Africa. She is currently still involved in both committees. Coetzee is also a lead auditor for the Blue- and Green Drop certification programme.

 

Dr Danie Nel

Dr Danie Nel obtained the following qualifications:

  • National Higher Diploma for Technicians (Civil Engineering) – Wits Technikon
  • BEng (Civil Engineering) – RAU
  • MEng (Civil Engineering )- RAU
  • DEng (Civil) – UJ
  • Advanced Management Programme – Henley Business School
  • Registered professional engineer.

Nel acquired extensive experience within the municipal sphere in his career of nineteen years at Johannesburg City Council. He then joined Rand Water for thirteen years, first as Head: Sanitation, and later as Design Engineer. He has been working as a specialist consultant on national and international projects for the past thirteen years.

The specialist areas on which he focuses are water- and sewage provision, rehabilitation of pipelines and systems, bulk water supply risks, project management of multi-disciplinary water supply projects and specialist advisory services.

He also serves as external examiner for engineering students at master’s and doctoral level.
