English First Additional Language Education (Senior Phase and FET)

Hierdie kortkursus bied ʼn omvattende en diepgaande oorsig van Engels Eerste Addisionele Taalonderrig, vir beide NGOS-studente en praktiserende onderwysers in die Senior Fase en VOO (Verdere Onderwys en Opleiding). Die kursus dek ʼn wye verskeidenheid vakspesifieke onderwerpe, sowel as relevante kwessies in die taalonderwysmilieu om studente toe te rus met gespesialiseerde kennis en vaardighede in die linguistieke sowel as letterkundige aspekte van Engels. Op hierdie wyse kan studente die taalklaskamer met selfvertroue – en kundigheid in Engels as die taal van onderrig en leer (TvOL) – betree. Die kursus is deur die Suid-Afrikaanse Raad vir Opvoeders (SARO) geakkrediteer, en tel ʼn totaal van twintig (20) professionele ontwikkelingspunte.

Dr. Nic de Jager

Dr. Nic de Jager doseer in die Fakulteit Opvoedkunde en spesialiseer in Engels vir beide die BEd- en NGOS-programme. Hy het ʼn baccalaureusgraad in Onderwys (Senior Fase en VOO) aan die Noordwes-Universiteit verwerf, en daarna ʼn BAHons in Engelsonderwys, ʼn MA in Toegepaste Taal en Geletterdheidsonderwys en ʼn PhD in Onderwys aan die Universiteit van die Witwatersrand. Dr. De Jager se passie vir onderrig en opvoeding lê in die kunste, letterkunde en verskeie digitale platforms, en die geleenthede wat hierdie areas vir kreatiewe uitdrukking en selfverwesenliking bied. Hy praktiseer sedert 2011 as onderwyser, vakhoof en dosent by verskeie sekondêre sowel as tersiêre onderriginstellings, onder meer Wits Universiteit en Tshwane Universiteit. Hy het sodoende grondige praktykervaring as opvoeder in beide die hoërskool- en universiteitskonteks opgedoen. Sy navorsingsfokus is multimodale pedagogiek, spesifiek die toepassing van alternatiewe onderrigstrategieë in die ontsluiting van voorgeskrewe vakkennis. Sy gepubliseerde werk sluit akademiese artikels asook illustrasies vir boeke in. Sy nuutste gepubliseerde artikel is getiteld “A Planet in Distress: Cross-Curricular Integrations of Visual Texts in the Mainstream Learning Context” (2023).

English First Additional Language Education (Senior Phase and FET)

This short course provides a comprehensive and in-depth overview of English First Additional Language Teaching, for both PGCE students and practicing teachers in the Senior Phase and FET (Further Education and Training). The course covers a wide variety of subject-specific topics, as well as relevant issues in the language teaching milieu to equip students with specialised knowledge and skills in the linguistic as well as literary aspects of English. In this way, students can enter the language classroom with confidence and expertise in English as the language of learning and teaching (LoLT). The course is accredited by the South African Council for Educators (SACE) and counts a total of twenty (20) professional development points.

COURSE CONTENT

  • To develop high level English First Additional Language (FAL) teaching knowledge.
  • To integrate subject content and pedagogical knowledge, that will enable students to teach English FAL at the Senior Phase and FET levels.
  • To focus on the integration of subject content knowledge; knowledge of the relevant curriculum policy; and relevant pedagogical knowledge.
  • To enable students to apply the integrated knowledge, i.e. the English FAL teaching knowledge, in practice.

IDEAL COURSE PARTICIPANT

This course is ideal for any prospective or current English teachers who wish to be empowered with in-depth knowledge of the instruction of English as an additional language at school level.

Course presenters

Dr Nic de Jager

Dr Nic de Jager lectures in the Faculty of Education and specialises in English for both the BEd and PGCE programmes. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Education (Senior Phase and FET) from the North-West University, and then a BA Honours degree in English Education, an MA in Applied Language and Literacy Education and a PhD in Education from the University of the Witwatersrand. Dr De Jager’s passion for teaching and education lies in the arts, literature and various digital platforms, and the opportunities these areas offer for creative expression and self-realisation. Since 2011 he has practised as teacher, subject head and lecturer at various secondary as well as tertiary education institutions, including Wits University and Tshwane University. In doing so, he gained in-depth practice experience as an educator in both the high school and university contexts. His research focus is multimodal pedagogy, specifically the application of alternative teaching strategies in unlocking prescribed subject knowledge. His published work includes academic articles as well as illustrations for books. His latest published article is titled “A Planet in Distress: Cross-Curricular Integrations of Visual Texts in the Mainstream Learning Context” (2023).
